Fancy Food Show 2012

Last week I attended the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. This is the North America's largest specialty food and beverage show. The show hosts more than 1300 vendors from 50 plus countries. It is always an overwhelming show. Your tastebuds don't quite know how to react to the samples that each vendor willingly gives you. I didn't see as many new trends this year. However, there was still some exciting things to see and taste. I noticited that vegetables were a big item. Freeze dried veggies, pickeled veggies as a snack items were at a number of vendors. Hummus chip (yummy) seemed to replace the Pop Chips of last year. Oat Shakes and Almond Water were new this year. The chocolate oat shake would be great for a filling treat. Coconut was big last year in water. This year it was in pudding, ice cream (thai coconut) and cookies (ginger coconut). The vendor I like the best was company selling mushroom kits using recycled Peets Coffee. I am hoping to get in on a restaurant protype with them.
After two days at the show I my feet where aching and I didn't want to try one more sample. I did come across a sign that let the participants know some of the health benefits from participating in the show. When you walk the entire show (which I did twice) you walk about 10,000 steps. That is about 4.3 miles and you burn about 432 calories. No wonder I was exhausted!

New Things to Come!

Happy New Year to all of you! Thank you for all your support over the last year. I am also grateful that I was able to share stories, good food and friendship with so many of you.

A new year and new projects on the horizon. Can you guess from the picture? I am giving you a sneak peak at what I hope is to come. I promise to let you in on things as they progress.

Wild Boar Farms in located at 2252 Morrison Lane in Fairfield. They are not too far from Larry's Produce. They do U-pick it heirloom tomatoes. However, if you are not in the picking mood they always have some picked you can choose from. They carry a large variety of heirlooms including: AAA Sweet Solano, Beauty King . Berkeley Tie-Dye, Black Cherry, Cherokee GreenEvan's Purple Pear, Green Zebra Cherry, Haley's Purple Comet, Large Barred Boar Pink Boar, Red Boar and Sweet Carneros Pink.
If you are planning on canning some tomatoes or making sauce they have a great deal (50cents/lb) on less than perfect tomatoes. They planted at various times so they will have tomatoes for awhile. Brad and his crew are incredibly nice. They supply some large restaurants, including Chez Panisse and French Laundry. Next week Sunset Magazine will be shooting at the farm....so look for a future article on the farm.

MagPies will be at Totally Local tomorrow in Green Valley from 9a.-1pm. They are doing a raffle for a bag of goodies from Market Vendors so come out and try your luck!

Upcomiing Events

Baby showers, birthdays, summer parties and lots more mini desserts! I love making small, bite size desserts and they are quickly gaining in popularity for events. We will be doing a wedding next Saturday with a dessert table. Several mini desserts, candy, coquembouche towers and a cake! I am so excited to participate in this as it will be a wedding using local caters and a local florist. You know how I love local. I hope to get some good photographs of the day!

As Magpies has various events in the next couple of weeks there will be no blog for two weeks or Farmer's Market next week. We will return to the Market on Saturday, August 13th. We will be at Wooden Valley for Harvest on August 14th. I will have lots of ice cream at Wooden Valley. Blog will resume the weekend of August 21rst/22nd. The end of baseball season was a month ago but I am just getting around to posting these pictures. These beautiful cupcakes are the creation of my youngest son. Totally Local Market - A Huge Success!

If you haven't read the newspaper or heard from one of your friends Totally Local is a new Farmer's Market held in Green Valley featuring local farms, wineries, artisans, baked goods, etc. Last week in opened to a crowd of more than 500 people! Not bad for a small country market! I was happy to be asked to participate this ongoing event! MagPies will be out amongst the trees for most of the remaining Saturday's (until October). It has been awhile!

Wow! It has been too long! For those of you who have waited so patiently for our return to the blog....Thank you! I have been busy exploring many endeavours both professionally and personally. Over the years I have tried many different approaches to keep making healthy and local food for our customers. Recently, I took some time to once again explore new and exciting ways to keep doing what we do. I am excited to share each and every change with you. Maybe a little superstitious....but I don't want to jinx things before they happen. So please stay tuned! I am so happy to be back to doing what I love best and that is cooking weekly. It has been a busy couple of week. First MagPies was honored to participate in Bridal Tea at Mary Cornelison Photography in Vacaville. Joining us were Downtown Gowns, Posh Couture Cakes, Tableaux and Stems Florist. The event brought sunshine on an otherwise rainy day. The event hosted a energetic and fun Fashion Show. The Tea was held at the Gaslighters Cabaret Theater. Look for upcoming events they hold. I heard the Murder Mystery Dinners are a blast! They sell out quickly though. Fancy Food Show

It seems like I have posted nothing but cake pictures. Not sure why. I have been saving these since January.

The above is Duff from Ace of Cakes, who was introducing his new cake products. The Food Show had various stars all over the show. Most of whom I wouldn't have known were stars if it weren't for the people I was with. Food is big business!

The show continued to grow this year. Again, it seemed to me like the organic/natural foods section continued to grow.

After all the eating, walking and talking I found some great products that I hope to be using in the near future. I found some new catering products, particularly in the drink department. I also found a new fondant product that has various flavors. Great for people who hate fondant on cake. I hope this changes peoples mind!

With all the cold and dreary weather I thought it would be nice to give bring you something colorful.
The cupcakes are rainbow cupcakes created for my daughters 9th birthday party which was held and Rhythm and Blue in Vacaville.
I am all about supporting local business and this is one of my favorites. Rhythm and Blue is a fun place to explore creativity (for adults and children). They use the arts to reach launch a new generation of confident, loving, motivated and community minded people. They have art and music camps, local musicians (including guitar and piano lessons), art studio and gallery and so much more. It is a fun and exciting place to have a birthday party also! We had 14 girls create stunning art projects, dance and eat rainbow colored food!
Mary who owns and operates this business is a true gem! She is patient, entertaining and a long time supporter of MagPies. We used her electricity for a season to run our freezer for ice cream at the Vacaville Farmers Market.

A New Year

I hope everyone had a great holiday filled with family, friends and food. It is hard to believe another year is almost over. Time just keeps flying by. I want to thank everyone who supported MagPies over the last year. Your business, your friendship and your referrals have allowed me to continue to do what I love. In this economy, where 70% of food business fail, I feel privileged to be baking and cooking for the last 3 years. In the next year, MagPies will continue to look for opportunities to grow, expand and bake. We will also continue to support our partners in the community. I wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. I hope our paths cross soon.

The Holiday Tree!

Holidays,for my family (like many), are full of traditions. One tradition, is taking the kids to get a real tree. Most of my friends and family have gone to fake trees with matching decorations. Their trees are perfect and look like they came out of a magazine ad. They are beautiful. However, I am still stuck on having a real tree. I am not sure why I am still stuck on having a real tree. I guess, I like the smell, the freshness of it. I like the imperfections. I have to admit, I can do without the needles but really if you get a fresh tree from a farm you don't get tons of needles dropping. So, after weeks of whining and moaning, I finally made time and took the kids to get a tree. I put the lights on then let the kids decorate. The kids enjoy looking at each ornament, most of which have stories or memories to go with them. They decorate the tree haphazardly. Seeing how many decorations they can hang on one branch. When the decorating is done we stand back while eating left over candy canes and drinking hot chocolate and admire our beautiful tree!

We have been out and about at various holiday events. As always, we enjoyed doing Shop 'till you drop at Wooden Valley. They had a new set-up this year, which everyone seemed to like. After Thanksgiving

Well, Thanksgiving is behind and I want to thank everyone for their support during the holiday. It is always nice to see new and old customers during the holidays. Magpies has recently been doing more Gluten-free, Vegan and Sugar-free baking. I love getting to bake for customers that might otherwise not have the opportunity to buy from a traditional bakery. Above are some pictures (taken from the phone camera) of a couple of vegan dishes we did for Thanksgiving. Shaved brussel sprouts, is first. This was covered with vegan cheese. The other one was stuffed portabello mushroom.
Since the holidays are so busy, my kids are lucky enough to get to go to their Grandparents in Oregon. They always have tons of fun! After the Thanksgiving rush I drove to Oregon. I only had one day off so I went there and back the same day. While I was driving I shot the above picture of Mt. Shasta. That was for those of you who haven't seen snow yet this year. The kids made me stop so they could play in the snow, so the other picture is of he worlds smallest snow man that we had fun building.

Solano Land Trust

The above pictures are from The Orchards at King Ranch in Hiddenbrook. There is something I love, about seeing my food on a table set in the middle of the orchard. It makes me happy. The orchard trees and the natural/organic approach I like to take to my food seems to go hand in hand.
Natalie, the Volunteer Coordinator, organized a hike that we provided lunch for. I unfortunately, didn't get to hike this year but I swear I am going to do it next year. I had fun though taking pictures and talking to some of the volunteers at the Land Trust. If you get a chance take a look at Solano Land Trusts website http://www.solanolandtrust.org. They have plenty of volunteer opportunities. If you can't volunteer time feel free to send a donation. They put this money towards education, purchase land and maintain land. A local and worthwhile cause! Also, check out their great education programs. They have lots of fun stuff going on all the time.

Hole in the Wall

It is a well known fact that I enjoy good food. I enjoy fresh, healthy and flavorful food. But every once in awhile I get that greasy good urge. You know, the kind of food you would only find in a Diner. Well, I had one of those moments last week. When I had my craving, I was in San Francisco in the Sunset District. This is an up and coming area for food in the City (according to the locals). You can find everything from Mediterranean food, Oriental, Vegan, Pies, etc. but no Diners. No Diners that is until I walked about 6 blocks. As the restaurants thinned out, I came across this little (and I do mean little) Diner. Since I love the small, unassuming restaurants I decided to give it a try. Art's Place is a mix of Vietnamese and American Food. I know that sounds strange but trust me! They take the good old American Breakfast of hash brown and eggs and fill it with Vietnamese flavored meat and American Cheese. Then fold it over so it looks like an omelet. Add an over easy egg (cooked perfect) some toast and rice, and you have one great breakfast! Besides the great breakfast I enjoyed ,watching the owners work in the very close quarters. The kitchen is open and has about two and half feet between the stove and the counter. You can actually feel the heat come off the stove while sitting at the counter.

Next week, I will be at the Nutree Farmers Market on Wednesday from 3pm-7pm and at Mankas Corners on Saturday from 10am - 3:30p.m.

Boy, it has been awhile since I have been able to do a post here. Excuses? Well, simple really....we have been busy with corporate and private events over the last couple of weekends. Not to mention a weekend of Family Farm Days in the Valley. I am not complaining one bit about being busy but I miss posting on the blog and really miss cooking weekly. So, hopefully we will be back on track (at least for a couple of weeks). Our Thanksgiving menu will be posted next week. We will be taking orders up to the week of the Thanksgiving.

I wanted to also remind all of you that we will be at Nut Tree Farmers Market until November 16th. This is a new Farmers Market and has only local growers and business. Please check it out if you get a chance. The Market has a couple of new vendors (different from the downtown Vacaville Market) and includes local grassfed beef (yeah!). Keep you eyes on this Market...my bet is next season this will be the Market to be at.

A couple of weeks ago I took an impromptu trip to San Francisco. It seemed like the thing to do to avoid the hot weather of the Valley. When I got to the City I did a little window shopping and headed over to my favorite coffee place Cafe Greco in North Beach. This place is always packed but I love to sit outside and sip my Italian Ille coffee and watch the world go by. On this particular day they had some bread pudding that caught my eye, so I had to have a taste. It was divine! Once, I was fueled and ready to do some walking I headed over to Graffeo Coffee. Graffeo as founded in 1935 and is one of the oldest artisan coffee roasters. They use a state-of the-art fluid bed roaster to ensure exact temperature and quality control when roasting their beans. A pound of coffee is expensive (I think$13) but man it was worth it! You can really taste the difference. So I know it seems like a coffee theme, here but wait! I walked further down looking for somewhere new to try for lunch and stumbled upon a Artisan Chocolate Shop. Of course, I wasn't going to pass by without a taste. So, in I went to XOX Truffles. Chef Jean-Marc Gorce hand makes and dips something like 27 flavors of truffles. I tried Carmel, Coconut, Lemon Ginger (my favorite), o l'orange and peanut butter. I know it sounds like too many truffles to eat in one sitting but these are tiny little morsels of perfection. Of course, I was so engrossed in trying all my truffles I forgot to take pictures of them. Here are some pictures of the signs that hang on the front windows.

A Chefs Garden

It isn't often I get to enjoy, a day out in the middle of the week, with a girlfriend. This week was one of the rare occasions I got to spend with my girlfriend L. After a quick coffee stop we headed out towards Yountville to Mustards Restaurant. Our mission was to look over the Chefs garden attached to the restaurant. The pictures above will give you a good idea what the garden looked like (unfortunately taken with my phone camera and not the good camera). It is enjoyable to see a larger restaurant like Mustards use produce straight from the garden to the table. After our tour we headed over to Dean Dulca and went isle by isle through the shop. I could spend far too much money in there! I left with some guava syrup and a treat from the bakery for L and I to share (before lunch of course). Then we headed downtown and ate lunch, which consisted of a Reuben sandwich (which we shared) and a goat cheese/vegetable pizza. Once we refuelled we went and hit the streets for a little more window shopping. A most enjoyable day that I hope we can repeat again.

Well, I made it through a couple weeks of a terrible end of summer cold and a child with a broken arm. Now it is back to cooking. Hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day Weekend!

There seems to have been a wave of cupcake and cake orders lately. Although, I enjoy the creativity of cakes, I wouldn't say it is a talent that come naturally to me. It certainly wasn't a skill that we spent a great deal of time on in pastry school. I think making cakes is a practiced skill. Unfortunately, I probably don't practice it enough. First Day of School

Well, I made it through the Back to School chaos and through the first week of school! This year I have graduated out of Elementary School and into Middle School. Well, my oldest son D did. A whole new world for him and for me. I didn't attend Middle School in the States. School in Europe is a different world. So I have a lot to learn. First rule, don't take any pictures, Mom! Second rule, just pretend you don't know me. But as we sat in the car waiting for the bell to allow him on the the grounds. He wasn't to big or to embarrassed to kiss me on the cheek and thank me for the big pancake breakfast I got up to make.

Anyway, it was all exciting and exhilarating (for the first day at least). After three days all four kids were tired and grumpy and already asking for a mental health day. I would like to agree with them. I am already looking forward to the next holiday!

Napa Chefs Farmers Market

The Napa Chefs Market has closed for the season. However, I attended the last one with friends A&D. The Chefs Market is a family event. It includes entertainment (4 stages), cooking demonstrations, produce, wine pairings and craft vendors. A&D are experienced customers at the Market. They know where to eat, they know the jewelry vendor, they even know where to find a seat and eat enjoy the entertainment. It was a treat to be guided through the crowd. The produce section had slowed down for the season but I was determined to come home with heirloom tomatoes, which I found. We then wandered over to the food. Pulled pork sandwich for me, tacos for A and D had a beef sandwich (I think). Next we roamed just outside of the Market to "Sift" for cupcakes. We tried the Snickerdoodle, Pink Champagne, Oh La La, Irish Car Bomb, Peanut Butter Ripple (Yum!) and Over the Moon. You have to love the names of these cupcakes. The cupcakes where enjoyable, although the frosting was a little sweet for my taste. We enjoyed our cupcakes with a nice cup of coffee from Annette's. Such an enjoyable evening with good friends, food (lots of it) and people watching. Next year, I will make more of an effort to make it to Napa for this Market.

The Beach Concert and a Fantastic Picnic

I don't get to do many activities without kids. However, when all my children were recently visiting family members I took the opportunity to enjoy the Friday night free Concert Series in Santa Cruz. But what would going to the beach be, without a fantastic picnic? Goodbye Old Friend

The picture above may look like an old mixer but in fact it is a old friend. This Kitchen Aid mixer is almost 20 years old and has travelled all over the world with me. I have plugged it in to the back of my car in England so I could mix a perfect cookie dough, ran it from a generator in Puerto Rico during a tropical storm and sat waiting for months for it to arrive in Bahrain. It went through the trials and tribulations of Pastry school with me. It is has mixed many failures. It has whipped perfect meringue and made my first homemade sausages with me. It is with great sadness that I watched it slowly finish its days in my kitchen. I finally removed it after the smoke cleared one evening. It sat on the dining room table as I contemplated discarding it or finding somewhere to put it. While flicking through a magazine on day, it came to me. What a perfect addition to the garden. The mixing bowl looks cheerful again with bright yellow mums. Nothing like re-purposing and adding some interest to the garden!

I will be at Wooden Valley on Sunday for the Rockin the Glass with the Matty T Band, The Jeff Watson Band and Pushback. Tickets are $20 and include a logo glass and a glass of Wooden Valley Wine. We all have friends that are planners and friends that are more spontaneous. My friend Jaymee is a spur of the moment kind a girl. One day a couple of weeks ago she called me and said lets go camping. Two days and 7 kids later, we were heading to the Redwoods. Now, with 7 kids a little planning is involved. We discussed our dinner and lunch menus and shopped so we had all the needed supplies. When we arrived at our camp site and had 7 hungry kids we quickly unpacked our camp stove, only to realize we were missing a part. With all the hungry kids getting antsy we improvised. Hot dogs on a stick and mac and cheese on the fire. It worked great. Coffee pot the next morning, right on the log and that night spaghetti, right over the fire, with corn on the cob. When our couple of days where done, we all agreed, that although the food was simple, it tasted fantastic! There is something that only a campfire can do to the taste of ordinary food!

The CIA is one of the most renowned culinary schools in the area. I was lucky enough to get a last minute, behind the scene tour of the cooking school I would have loved to have had the opportunity to attend. My friend, Tim, took a security job at the school. He invited some friends and I to have lunch. We dressed appropriately, thinking we would be eating in the famed restaurant, attached to the school. When we arrived, we were shuffled through the employee entrance and given security permission to entering the school. Tim and the Security Chief, walked upstairs to the student/employee kitchen. In the kitchen the students get the experience of cooking for a crowd, just like working in a restaurant. The lunch rush was winding down but there was still plenty of food available. Tim allowed us to gather a plate from the various station. You would think we would be disappointed by eating in the student kitchen but in fact it was a treat (for me at least). The kitchens were stacked with top of the line equipment and the students were busy preparing the next meal. It was thrilling to watch all the hussle and bussle! I filled my plate with all the pastries, I could. I made a turkey sandwich with fresh bread, home made mayo, fresh greens (from their garden), piled up the best potato salad and sat down to enjoy the feast. I then enjoyed a behind the scene tour of the teaching facilities and prep areas. If you ever get the chance to enjoy the grounds stop by. It is a beautiful setting and worth the drive.

Things have been surprisingly busy. Catering has picked up! Due to our catering schedule we haven't been at the market. I have missed the hustle and bustle of the market. I was able to take a rare Saturday off and explore the nearby Davis Market. The market host very different vendors then the Vacaville Market. I enjoyed tasting the sweets of the many bakeries and enjoyed the diversity of the vegetables, fruits and food vendors. So, if you get a chance check out all the different local Markets. Old is timeless

I don't know what the attraction is, but I have always liked old things. Perhaps it is the untold story that lingers within the object. I like old houses, old kitchen items, old cars and old books. In fact, I much prefer old to anything new. To me old things provide comfort. They are well worn and used. There is a history to something that has scratches, dings and torn pages. Anything that appears to seen many a day is just my cup of tea.

The old items I have collected at various places are some of my most cherished. My great grandma's quilts, generations of family silver, recipes handed down from various people, old plates from car boot sales in England and the list goes on.

I have many collections of older things that I have started and some that I would like to start. The list is endless. Old linens, antique pie tins, belik china, pie flutes.

In the meantime, everytime I use the hand-embroidered linen that I aquired from my grandparent's closet, I will wonder how many other tables it was laid across. A reminder of my Grandma is seen in every stitch so lovingly crocheted into blankets. My Aunt Kathee is renown for her garage sale skills and has loads of collectibles. Perhaps I should plan a trip to Vancouver soon as I hear she is on the verge of decluttering.

For now, I guess I better take my "old" self to the kitchen and wish that my skin had the patina of aged furniture.

Mother's Day is approaching, and I can barely remember the days when I wasn't a Mother. By some standards, I was little late in the game when I decided to have kids. Then, once I decided, I didn't stop for some years. What those years produced where 4 kids. Four kids who took my once sane and somewhat organized world and turned it around. It doesn't seem possible that there were days in my life that didn't involve juggling a variety of jobs. Each day I run the gambit from being a doctor, a referee, a teacher, a homemaker, a volunteer, a taxi driver to a cook. I never thought being a Mom could be so exhausting, challenging and fulfilling. I can't remember my life before kids and I am not sure I really need to. The kids fill my days with love, craziness and happiness. I can't imagine a day going by where I don't get the latest piece of art work to cover my fridge, or see my daughter and her friends latest dance moves. Somehow, being a Mom after 11 years still excites me. I look forward to each adventure my children bring my way. To all the Mom's and Mr. Mom's that I know - keep up the good work! Happy Mother's Day!

The April 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Esther of The Lilac Kitchen. She challenged everyone to make a traditional British pudding using, if possible, a very traditional British ingredient: suet

I love steamed puddings! They remind me of home (I grew up in England). I used Atora (vegetarian suet) in the pudding. The pudding wasn't as moist as other puddings I have made, perhaps because of the vegetarian suet,but was still very good. I topped the pudding with a vanilla bean custard.

My Garden

Truth be told, I am a terrible in the garden. I don't remember to water, don't like to weed, and in general do not have a green thumb. I do, however, enjoy looking at a beautiful garden. I enjoy my herbs, roses and love when the lavender fills the garden. My kitchen at the house looks on to the backyard and this time of year the garden is starting to take shape. Thanks goodness I have two gardener's at the house to keep things looking good. My husband is an avid gardener. He really gets satisfaction from starting seeds, watching things grow and then harvesting it. My other gardener is my 10 year old son. You know he has a passion for it when he asks you to buy him a blueberry plant for almost a year. Yes, we finally got him one and I can't wait to start see the fruits of his labors.

Happy Spring Everyone! I just wish it felt more like Spring. Where did the sunshine go? I am anxiously awaiting its return. I have started to prepare for the upcoming Farmers Market with a new look for our booth. I have also decided to refine and change how and what we serve at the Market slightly. I will keep you posted with upcoming changes. It is my hope, that the goods we sell will be able to serve both the customers that like to come to the market for the same thing every week and those who like to get something different each time. Daring Bakers - Pineapple Tian with Lemon and Lime Marmalade

The 2010 March Daring Baker's Challenge was hosted by Jennifer of Chocolate Shavings. She choose Orange Tian, as the challenge for this month, a dessert based on a recipe from Alian Ducasse's school in Paris.

To be honest, I am tiring of Oranges and Lemons. So instead I decided to make a Pineapple Tian. Mostly because I had a pineapple already. I grilled the pineapple to give it some color. In the stabilized whip cream I made a lemon and lime marmalade (picture above). The marmalade by itself, was a hit. I added lime zest to the pate sable.

I have never made a Tian before so I loved the challenge! Thanks Jennifer for a adding something new repertoire.

The Roti shells use organic flour, cumin and soymilk. The stew has chunks of carrots, onions, sweet potato, white potato, eggplant, green peppers, zucchini, chickpeas and is topped with finely grated coconut.

French Macarons

Macarons are tiny colorful cookies that are now seen all over at bakeries and pastry shops. I have been trying to perfect them for awhile. There are many different techniques to make these and advice found on blogs and websites haven't produced the perfect macaron, for me.

After my somewhat futile attempts, I finally took a class in San Francisco and got the missing pieces to the puzzle. Actually, I think it was one missing piece - I have been over stirring the temperamental batter.

So, I had my best success yet! I am beginning to think it is a well practiced art, so I am going to keep at it. Although the colors are what initially attracted me to these cute cookies, I think I like them in their natural state . Maybe just with some great topping on top. In this way, they somehow seem more organic.

So I have added them to the menu this week, so you can give me your input. I hope in upcoming months to work on some different flavors/fillings.

Ok, I admit to having a terrible sickness. I collect cookbooks! My collection started at an early age and was quite well controlled for many years. I was able to keep all my cookbooks on one book shelf. Over the years as more and more cookbooks were published my collection grew. I now have so many cookbooks that my bookshelves are overflowing. I don't know what it is about them. I enjoy looking at them, reading them and referring to them. Much to my Mom's disgust, I have some cookbooks that look like they have been used. Splatters and spills adorn the pages. I have others that I have never cooked out of but just enjoyed reading. I have cookbooks from various parts of the world, cookbooks given to me as gifts and some that have just appeared on my shelf.

Cold Cure

Ok, so I was at the Nutrition Shop in Vacaville yesterday getting my yummy veggie sandwich and was talking to one of the girls who was looking for a cold cure. Here is what Tina (the manager at the store) told her. Elderberry is supposed to do wonders if you drinks in every 2 hours. It is a refreshing cold or hot drink. I thought this was interesting So did a little more research. Here is some information I found on the Internet that I thought I would share.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra, S. canadensis) reduces viral infections, including the common cold and flu.

Elderberry works as a simple cleanser and as an antioxidant. It is also a diaphoretic, diuretic, and hepatic. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-catarrhal, and acts as a mild laxative. This gentle herb is used for bronchitis, catarrh, common cold symptoms including coughs and sore throats, fevers, influenza, neuralgia, rheumatism, sciatica, skin disorders, and hay fever.Two of the compounds found in Elder, alpha- and beta-amyrin palmitate, have been shown to exhibit strong antihepatotoxic activity, making it an excellent choice for combating liver damage. Other plant chemicals, the flavonoids, phenolic compounds and triterpenes, have antioxidant and antimicrobial qualities, with subtle “hormone-like” communication capabilities. This subtle herb can often avert problems before they get started, making it increasingly popular as an immune booster among people who have immune compromised health issues such as HIV. What is The Evidence? Elderberry’s use as a flu remedy dates back to Roman times. Current research shows a stimulation of antibody protection and a reduction of flu symptoms in three days or less. Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu of the Hadassah-Hebrew University in Israel found that Elderberry disarmed the neuraminidase enzyme, which flu viruses use to penetrate healthy organism cells. Twenty per cent of her flu study subjects reported significant improvement within 24 hours, 70 per cent within 48 hours, and 90 per cent were completely cured within three days. The subjects consuming Elderberry syrup also had higher levels of antibodies against the virus. In contrast, subjects receiving the placebo required six days to recover. Elderberry has been proven effective against eight strains of influenza. This gives it a stronger batting average than any antiviral vaccine.

Happy Chinese New Years!

Chinese New Year began on February 14th. Since the weekend was a busy one for us with Valentines Day, etc. I am playing catch up this week with a somewhat Asian inspired menu.

The Chinese New Year is one of the oldest festivals and most important festivals for the Chinese people. I love that Chinese New Years is not only a time to welcome in the New Lunar Year but also a time when families come together and feast. After all, anything to do with food always interest me! I also find the traditions of getting rid of the old and starting fresh in the New Year exciting. Many families sweep and clean their houses from top to bottom to rid any bad luck that may carry over to the next year. New clothes are purchased to symbolize a new start and red paper fortune scrolls are make sure of good fortune for the household. Then comes the food which offers many traditions such as serving a whole fish (the cutting of carries bad connotations, such as severing a family tie.

I was thinking, since my Western New Years didn't start off so well maybe I will adopt some of the Chinese traditions to make sure the rest of the year brings nothing but good fortune!

I hope I am over all deaths and sicknesses! Having a few weeks off has been difficult. Mostly cause I am not a sit around kind of person. But I guess my body needed the rest. Although I wish next time it would quietly let me know instead of throwing me into the hospital. After such a long rest I am ready to get back to the kitchen. Thank you everyone for you kind thoughts, prayers and beautiful flowers. It helped with a speedy recovery

Since there has been such a long break I don't think I fully caught you up on my finds at the Food Show in San Francisco. The things I loved where as follows:

Blue Bottle Coffee

Ok, so we made a trip to Blue Bottle Coffee for their famed siphon coffee. Siphon coffee looks like a crazy science experiment. We waited about 40 minutes for this ultra popular brew. I have to say it was good. Not quite the flavor of espresso but flavor full none the less.

Siphon coffee makers are made up of four parts: the bottom container where the water initially sits and the brewed coffee eventually rests; a top container that has a siphon tube attached to it (and a hole in the bottom of the vessel), where the coffee brewing takes place; a type of sealing material (usually a rubber gasket) to help create a partial vacuum in the lower vessel while brewing is taking place, and a filter, which can be made of glass, paper, metal, or cloth.There is also a heating source, and there's usually three types - a cloth-wick alcohol burner (slowest), gas or electric stove top (faster), or a specialty butane burner (fastest). There are additional heating devices, including the halogen burner system that is part of the $20,000 setup that Blue Bottle Cafe in San Francisco has for their siphon coffee makers.

My husband is still in Japan. We hope he makes in Stateside soon. During his time in Japan I have often sent him wondering the streets looking for baking/cooking items to send home to me. The latest is a Japanese hotpot. I saw a cookbook from a chef that used the hotpot to make various traditional and non-traditional dishes. I thought it would be a fun thing to add to my collection. I also had him send me knives (ceramic and Titanium) and lots of pictures of local bakeries (like the one above). The other pictures is of he City of Sasebo. Thought I you all would like to do some arm chair traveling with me.

This weekend I will be attending the Food Show in S.F. I can't wait! I got so much inspiration last year. I will try and blog/twitter from the show as best I can. They don't allow photography but I will see what I can sneak with the camera on my phone.

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope everyone had a safe and fantastic holiday! I can hardly believe we are on to a New Year. Not sure where last year went. I spent the New Years bowling with lots of kids and a few adult friends. I even made it to midnight! Like a lot of people I start the New Year off with many goals, hopes and a few dreams. After working really hard from Thanksgiving to Christmas I always seem to want to start the year off with getting back to eating right! This year I felt like I needed to detox my system a little. So I am doing a mostly vegetarian diet for 30 days. On week one I have done well. I will keep you posted! I hope during this somewhat slower period to make some changes to the blog and have some plans for some new ideas in the spring for MagPies, that I would like to work on. Of course, I dream to travel a little more, continue educating myself in the world of food and perhaps have some sort of restaurant venue fall in my lap. I know I am not asking for much.

We get to live in a small community but get the excitement of a "big city". The pictures above show the ice skating rink in Union Square. A much suggested trip, if you haven't done so. So much fun! Building a gingerbread house is not an easy task! It is not just about baking, some architectural skills are required. Especially, if you decided to build a house as big as I did! This is where my husband comes in. He was the design genius. There is no way I could have figured it out without him. He has earned his Daring Baker points!

With all the chaos of meeting orders and catering jobs for the holiday's, I sometimes lag behind in meeting my kids needs. They have been nagging me all week about going to get a Christmas Tree. I tried to convince them that we should put up our "fake tree" with all the matching decorations. After all, most of my friends have graduated to such trees. But, the kids somehow knew that was the easy way out. No, they wanted the real thing. So, I took out the seats of the van, loaded up all the kids and a friend to help carry the tree. Off to Larry's Produce (where I get my tree every year), in the mud and rain. Let the kids run around and pick the tree, which of course, was the biggest tree with more imperfections then I would like. Stuffed it into the van, pine needles everywhere. Got it home, shoved it into the stand (it barley fit) and then rummaged through the garage for the decorations. Of course, the kids still want to put up our mixed match lights (bubble lights that were popular in the 1970's) and they spent hours putting up the decorations, remembering each one made, given to us, and collected over the years. So, the fake tree stays in the loft for another year and the perfectly matched decorations continue to gather dust, but it is my guess, that my years are numbered for such events. When we all sat down exhausted from the days events we looked at our tree and commented on how it was the best tree we have ever had!

I don't know where the time goes! Since Wednesday, I have been trying to post the blog. Everyone is busy this time of year but for MagPies it has been particulary busy. Our catering has grown leaps and bounds this last year and we have a great following of loyal customers. Even though, I have been rolling pastry until my hands hurt some nights, I am thankful for the support of our small business. I don't know how but the Thanksgiving crept up on us once again. While I won't be traveling for the holiday (there is too much baking to be done) my daughter will. She is off to Long Beach on Saturday morning. Since it is a busy baking time I won't be able to fly her down. But she is going take a step and fly all be herself. So, I will be taking her to the airport on Saturday morning to see her off on her maiden flight.

It has been a long time

OK, life happens! I have been in a "funk" as my friends have been well aware. Thanks for your support and for "hanging in there" with me. Following is an explanation about why I have not been been myself lately:

My Dad passed away on September 19th. Although his death was not completely unaccepted his loss has taken me off guard. After all, he has been part of my life since I was 9 years old. From the moment we met him, he insanely spoiled us girls. Ponies, swimming pool (who has one of those in England, no one), first VCR on the block, a black BMW for my 17th Birthday. Besides being spoiled with monetary items he also gave me a bug for traveling. Traveling all over Europe, India, Kenya and when I wanted to go to Egypt, he found a place down the road from our house actually called Egypt. In my teens, he tolerated my latest haircuts, my loud friends (he built us a games room to isolate us) and endured my begging to be allowed to go to the pub. As I got older, we shared so many things. He had a love of food. He taught me about spices. He made some of my favorite dishes. When I was pregnant with my 4th child, I was living back in England, he cooked for me almost every night. I would encourage him with each dish to make mine a bit more spicy. It got so hot my Mom wouldn't even eat it! We now say that is why my son has a hot-tempered personality. My deepest gratitude to all of you that have supported me over the last couple of years, while I cared for him. When my Dad fell ill, he often apologized to me for having to care for him. Although, I told him I was happy to. More like I was honored to!

Looking back, he was such an influence on me, my children and my family as a whole. He will be missed but my love for him will continue with my baking/cooking.

On top of this, I got a terrible strain of the flu. It has taken me the better part of 3 weeks to recover. I really didn't want to pass on any germs so I had to make sure my cough had subsided. Thanks goodness that is over with!

It is long overdue....so, back to work.

Daring Bakers - Dobos Torta

The August 2009 Daring Bakers' challenge was hosted by Angela of A Spoonfulof Sugar and Lorraine of Not Quite Nigella. They chose the spectacular DobosTorte based on a recipe from Rick Rodgers' cookbook Kaffeehaus: ExquisiteDesserts from the Classic Caffés of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.
So, what is the Dobos Torta (or Torte)?

The Dobos Torta is a five-layer sponge cake, filled with a rich chocolate buttercream and topped with thin wedges of caramel. (You may come across recipes which have anywhere between six and 12 layers of cake; there are numerous family variations!) It was invented in 1885 by József C. Dobos, a Hungarian baker, and it rapidly became famous throughout Europe for both its extraordinary taste and its keeping properties. The recipe was a secret until Dobos retired in 1906 and gave the recipe to the Budapest Confectioners' and Gingerbread Makers' Chamber of Industry, providing that every member of the chamber can use it freely.

I made a mini torta with 7 layers. For some reason I feel like the layers need to an odd number. I added a Walnut Liquer to each sponge layer. Adding a slightly nutty flavor. Instead of the traditional triangles on top, I choose to put my carmel slivers on the side of the cake.

The cake was a bit too sweet for me but liked by others. I would maybe change the frosting next time.

Harvest in the Valley

Last Sunday I spent a day off, exploring the valley for the start of Harvest. Believe it or not, with all the work I do in the Valley, I hadn't yet gone wine tasting. Truth be told, I didn't really go wine tasting this time either as I was the designated driver. That's what happens when you a light weight drinker. However, I still enjoyed the experience. We toured Tenbrink Winery, Wooden Valley, Blue Victorian and the Suisun tasting Room which has tastings from various wineries. All the wineries had specials going on. Encouraging people to come out. At Tenbrink, we enjoyed tasting in their cool barrel room. They are completing a picnic area and tasting room. At Wooden Valley (which is like home for me). I visited with friends, while everyone else did a flight (5 tastings) in the tasting room. We also all graped stomped. It was much harder then you think! My friend Meghan and I lost miserably. We also enjoyed some good barbecued sausages. At Blue Victorian we enjoyed the beautiful vineyards and peaceful outdoor setting. We ended our day at the ClayStations (thanks Theresa) and Mankas Corner Cafe. I will taking future Sundays off to finishing enjoying the sites of the Valley. After all, there are more wineries to explore. To all my friends in the Valley thanks for a great day!

During the "season" I have been the lucky recipient of many tasty and beautiful gifts. The gifts are often home grown or stem from the Farmers Market. Many times I use the fruits and vegetables I receive, in baking for the Market. Other times I just enjoy the fresh fruit or vegetables just as they are. This week I was was lucky to receive the scrumptious pears and plums from Mr. Inn. These were harvested from his parents orchard in the valley. His parents were also kind enough to give me some incredible peaches a couple of weeks ago. The peaches and the plums didn't make it to market. The sugar plums were gone in a day. Enjoyed by me, my kids and all the neighborhood kids at my house. You never seen a bunch of kids enjoy fruit so much! I decided to share the pears with everyone at the Market with a pear frangipane. Thank you to all how have shared so much with me. It never goes unappreciated!

On another note, I want to remind everyone that it is the start of Harvest in the Valley this weekend. Lots of the Wineries are having activities and different events going on. I will be out on Sunday enjoying the festivities and celebrating my sister's birthday. I hope you make your way to the valley and enjoy all it has to offer. Catering Happenings

I did a catering job at Rush Ranch this week for Solano Land Trust. Rush Ranch is a beautiful location, right in Suisun. They offer carriage rides, walks, hikes and a wealth of knowledge about wildlife in our area. I drove up about 6:30a.m. to a beautiful horse nursing her foal. I had a quick look around the Blacksmith area and then headed off to work. I set-up in the Nature Center which has a large window looking out on vast land. The cloud formations were perfect. It was an incredible way to start the day. It got me thinking, this was another place close to home that I haven't taken advantage of. We have so many incredible places right in our backyards.

Anyway the catering part went well. We kept everything very organic and sustainable. An enjoyable program was shared and then I started clean up. We distributed the left over food, loaded the dishes and started to take the table decor down. When I went to throw away the beautiful flowers from Erickson Farms, the farmer stopped me and asked if he could have the flowers. I said sure, and asked innocently if they were for his wife. He responded "No, to feed my goat". Now that is keeping green!

We will be at Vacaville Farmers Market on Saturday from 8a.m.-Noon. We have been able to work out a deal to access electricity and will be bringing our freezer for homemade ice cream while the weather remains warm.
